Although Star Wars may have been set in a galaxy far far away, George Lucas based the story on many characters and events from within our Milky Way's history. Lucas' inspiration came not only from a long time ago, Ancient Rome, but also relatively recent history, such as World War II. In a 2005 Boston Globe article, George Lucas said, "a lot of it came from our literary history, our social history." The story of Star Wars was inspired by many historical events and societies, most notably the Ancient Roman Empire and World War II. In the Star Wars series, George Lucas gave a refreshing interpretation on the change in political systems in Ancient Rome in 27 BC. Both Rome and the Star Wars galaxy had their government forms changed from a republic to an empire as both Julius Caesar and Sheev Palpatine took power from the people that were checking them. Palpatine and Hitler both rose to power by becoming chancellor and then receiving emergency powers, Hitler after the Reichstag fire and Palpatine after the Invasion of Naboo. In addition, Hitler and Palpatine had both amassed an army secretly, Hitler with building U-Boats in Spain and Finland, and Palpatine with the clones. Not only are Star Wars and Nazi Germany similar in their politics, there are also correlations in their respective militaries. In a commentary of the film, George Lucas referred to many of Palpatine's subordinates as Nazis and their costumes were inspired by Nazi uniforms. The Stormtroopers were based off the German Sturmabteilung, who were the German special forces in World War II. The Stormtrooper's rifle is also based off the German MG34. The Millenium Falcon was modeled after the B-29 Superfortress, bomber made by Boeing for the U.S. Air Force. The Falcon and the B-29 have the same cockpit layout and gunning turret.
