Star Wars: Hydraulics In Robotics Today

594 Words3 Pages

Hydraulics are a key component in robotics today. Hydraulics is the process of applying pressure on a fluid to transmit that pressure to another point. Robotic scientists use hydraulics to operate mechanisms for different robot parts such as arms and legs. This technology only works upto a certain degree though due to the complexity and difficulty of application and using hydraulics to perform certain tasks. Although certain things may be out of reach of us right now, there are many concepts of futuristic versions of the technology we have today seen in science fiction like Star Wars. In Star Wars there are complex robots simply referred to as droids. These droids such as BB8, C3PO, and R2D2 are capable of undertaking complex tasks and performing swift and fluid movements. It is a goal of scientists today to develop modern robotics to a point where it would be on par with the technology envisioned in these Star Wars’ droids. …show more content…

They can power fast moving legs, wheels, and even rockets. Some droids even use their hydraulics to spin entire sections of their bodies. Droids known as Astromechs, like R2-D2, have a wide range of tools and accessories stored inside their round trash can like bodies. This equipment can consist of, but is not limited to, a life form scanner, utility saw, signal amplifier, universal computer interface arms, and even a fire extinguisher. Astromechs conceal all this equipment inside themselves in their default state for easy storage and maximum mobility. They use advanced hydraulics to extend and operate these devices when they encounter situations that call for
