The Power of the Force can withstand bear attacks – and Leonardo DiCaprio, as Star Wars retains its crown atop the box office. For a fourth consecutive term, Star Wars – The Force Awakens retained vigilant in the face of uncertainty – earning $41.6 million, and defeating newcomer, The Revenant, in the process. Star Wars managed to rise from the ashes on Saturday and Sunday after receiving its first defeat on Friday at the hands of The Revenant – causing many to predict a potential upset by the weekend’s end. Instead, the talk of Star Wars dominance will continue for at least another week – as the billion dollar powerhouse continues to inch closer to the potentially unachievable reign of Avatar. The film, which may finally land Leonard DiCaprio an Oscar win, even defeated Star Wars on Friday – kicking off its debut with a healthy $14.3 million. An upset wasn’t meant to be, though – as Star Wars recovered and held The Revenant to an applaud-worthy runner-up position. The Revenant, which should remain relevant all throughout award season, was produced on a whopping $135 million. Third place belonged to the heavily panned comedy, Daddy’s Home – earning $15 million. For a film that was pummeled by bad reviews, Daddy’s Home sure has spit in the face of critics by crossing the $100 million domestic threshold.
