The hypothesis that I predicted prior to the observation was that more upper class individuals will come into Starbucks rather than middle or low class individuals. As for Mugsies, I predicted that mostly middle class individuals would come to that coffee shop, rather than upper class individuals. Comparing and contracting two coffee shops from two different locations was interesting to observe, as well as the personalities, behaviors and genders of the different types of customers. As mentioned in the field notes, most of my hypothesis were correct about higher class people came into Starbucks. Starbucks can be known to be expensive, therefore mostly likely the customers would consider themselves able to afford these pricey coffees, smoothies, …show more content…
Out of the seven customers that came into Starbucks seventy-five percent were middle class. There were only twenty-five percent were upper class. This same ratio on gender was the same with 75% women and 25% men observed at Starbucks during this time. This indicated that most customers were middle class women that visited Starbucks rather than upper class individuals. Some things to take into consideration would be the time of day of the observation, might also have a different outcome and selection of customers. Interestingly, was that the customers that visited Starbucks alone also had a book or items to look at during their visit. Observed also were the behaviors of those that may have been insecure or nervous, appeared to rely more on the use of their mobile phone during their time at the coffee …show more content…
Most of my findings while observing conclude just opinion base. My opinions demonstrate how different individuals explore different areas of interest and have different behaviors in coffee shops, from talking and socializing, as well as reading a book. Participation in the setting was through personal observations as an observer. Several individuals came in and out of the two different coffee shops while I sat at a table observing. I did not participate or interact with any of the observations that took place between the customers or employees. A few of the individuals were noted to have different behavior and actions towards other individuals that were present. Also, I don’t believe my presence was a factor during the observation at the coffee shop since they were a neutral environment. By watching the customers and employees, I could not see any discomfort or notice since I was looking around to make it less noticeable. As far as being objective, I believe that I was very objective during the observation. I was able to bring my own knowledge towards understanding how individuals think, act, behave, and interact in a public setting I do not feel that I was biased to one side or the other when determining which individual was what class when classifying one. Rather,
