Essay In this world, 80% of people act racist without knowing it. in THE HATE YOU GIVE, by Angie Thomas, Starr the protagonist tries to let people realize the actions the police are taking. Starr tries to get justice for Khalil, her childhood best friend, because he was killed. Throughout the book, Starr showed content growth as she participated in many events, such as her ability to socialize, interview and speak for black lives. Starr shows growth in her ability to socialize by interacting with social media. Taking advantage of the internet, “[Starr] started a new blog-The Khalil I Know.” (p.204). The blog contained pictures of Khalil and explained about how Khalil lived and how he didn’t deserve to die. Starr wants to let everybody know who Khalil was, how he was a person and had a family… She wanted everybody to look at Khalil’s awesome talents and traits, not just how he was ‘’potentially’’ a drug dealer. As the book evolves, Starr learns that mourning over Khalil’s death was not going to help him get justice. In the beginning of the book, Starr was crying a lot after Khalil death, and didn’t really want to do anything other than lying on the bed, but she shows big improvement as you read further in the book. Starr didn’t want people to pity her or feel for her since she didn’t deserve to be felt for. She said that the people should be saving those emotions for Khalil. Starr also wanted to participate in interviews, and she didn’t want to be seen as a crybaby. Another reason why Starr wanted to control her emotions is because she didn’t want people in her school to think she is the witness due to emotions. There are sometimes where Starr couldn’t contain her anger, like when Hailey verbally insulted Khalil, causing Starr to “slam [her] fist against the side of Hailey’s face.” (p.341). (Add
