In the society we currently reside in, the media is plagued with police brutality, hate crime, “eff the police” banners and riots. In my time working close with these officers, I have come to realize that much of this media attention and rumors are exactly that, rumors and attempts to get more views and stir up issues. I can’t say this job path wasn’t interesting. The history of corrections is dark and savage, and our methods have changed greatly from the past, however, we do not forget the past, for it is important in the growth of our future.
As stated before, I have alway be slightly curious about what it would be like as a CO, and I enjoyed the opportunity to sate that feeling. I have learned a significant amount, and have had my eyes opened to complexities that I never really considered. It didn’t hurt that a close friend of mine was available for me to shadow. This does not mean I am opposed to it, however, as I feel I could do well in this field. My first option at this moment is to work in Computer Technology, with a focus on Virtual Reality. Becoming a CO would be a nice ‘Plan B’ to have just in case.
To be honest, I didn 't expect to learn anything I didn 't already know about correctional institutions. I thought that all the common knowledge was just that, all of the knowledge. What you see is what you get, but I was wrong, and pleasantly so. In the end of all things my eyes were opened to the truth that was our law enforcement. I was once with the people that believed cops were a terrible good for nothing, bigoted, and racist, now I stand here with a completely new mind set, and appreciation for them.
