Former First Lady Michelle Obama once said, “Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” This is something that I certainly live by. When I think about my own past experiences, I realize that the greatest joys in life are when one brings joy to others. Last night, I was teaching one of my karate students a concept that is considered difficult for most beginners to understand. I spent roughly thirty minutes working on it with him, and there was certainly some frustration. When my superior came over and asked to see what we had been working on, he did it nearly perfectly and the look on his face was priceless. Little moments like that in life are what keeps me going - not grades, not wealth, …show more content…

I would be a good candidate for the National Honor Society because I am a leader. This past June, I was privileged to be able to attend the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) at James Madison University. That one weekend taught me more about leadership and myself than I can even begin to explain. I entered that weekend as a quiet, anxious person and left with the confidence and courage to stand up for myself. When I was at a summer program at Virginia Tech in July, my friend was being bullied because she is an Islamic Afghan immigrant. People were saying simply awful things, like she was a terrorist or a slave, just because she was from Afghanistan. After a few days, I had had enough so I went to the proper adults who took care of it. These people were nearly kicked out as a result. After that, Farah was not bullied for the rest of the program. Virginia Tech’s motto is “Ut Prosim”, meaning “That I may serve.” I have lived a life dedicated to serving others. Service is about helping others in ways big and small. Furthermore, it is about being a part of something bigger than yourself. I clocked in my first community service hours when I was eleven years old, and now I have at least five hundred hours of service over my
