Why would someone like myself want to pursue a graduate degree in Licensed Clinical Social Work? That’s a simple question to answer for several reasons. Growing up, I faced both personal and interpersonal experiences which made me realize I want to work with others. By opening my own private practice, I will be able to accomplish this goal. My specialty interest will be mental issues (anxiety, depression, OCD), family dynamics, and relationships. My parents divorced when I was only four years old. This was traumatic for my family as we had to transition from one unit to two units. During this time, I felt an array of emotions such as anger and depression. It was so severe that I had to move away from campus and come back home. This was not something I was proud of and made me even more determined to overcome. Immediately I went back to counseling and worked on bettering myself. After a year and a half of hard work, I felt more comfortable in my skin. This was the second instance in my life that made me want to help others, specifically with Mental Illness. Working in the Human Services field has shaped not only myself, but my personal competence levels. An example of this was when I interned at a private practice, focusing on mental health and coaching. The best part of my experience was the fact that I was able to empower others by providing them the resources to seek help. After struggling with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, I knew helping others go through difficult times was my passion. I find myself continually giving others advice or guiding them to seek help. As crazy as it sounds, it is almost second nature to talk about what I have learned studying Psychology. I feel as if I am making a difference and an impact in the world. Seeing my own friends and family light up when they hear my suggestions provides a sense of fulfillment in my life. My particular interests fit with our specialization in Community Partnerships statement due to the fact that I want to help individuals who struggle with all of these life circumstances. My previous experiences have led me to gain the knowledge and skills to help strengthen and form better communities.
