As I was sitting in my P212 class we were told about one of our new assignments called the Career Action Plan(CAP), my first reaction was “oh my gosh it is my first year of college and I honestly already don’t want to be in the major I am now so how am I supposed to make a CAP”, but my second reaction had me excited. I have always enjoyed the Health care field and helping others, but it wasn’t until I found my passion in my heart to be able to understand what all steps I should take to become a successful college student first then an Occupational therapist in the finished product. I have had great opportunities already just being in down town Indy, but some could be: Volunteer work, part time jobs, connections and resources. While it is only my first year in college I have had a ton of opportunities to get involved around Indy. At the beginning of the school year I sat out on a quest to find a job I would want to go to and a job that would look good on my resume for a future job application to Pediatric occupational therapy. I took a job in a before and after school care watching kids and interacting with them. This gives me good background knowledge of a kids mind again. Finding a part time job that relates to your future career goals is a wonderful step in planning out your future. Here at IUPUI we have a lot of resources as well to discover new people. The more time you spend talking to your adviser and professors, they can help you connect with more people down the line. Which leads me to meeting new people and making more connections.
One person you meet today can be a possible employer in the future. While it is always good to have close friends making connects with new people is also a good thing to. If you put yourself out there, you will meet employers, bosses or even co-workers. They can help you get a job in the field you are applying for. Connections will lead to greater …show more content…

In two different classes they talked about how this step of career planning is important. You can focus on the aspect of getting yourself out there. Building your resume is more than just following some template on a website. When I talk about building a resume I mean the stuff you fill in it. One thing you can fill inside your resume is your opportunities. In college you will be able to take part in lab research, get professional references and gain jobs that you could use as knowledge in your career choice. One example is the route I took. In high school I worked a fast food job and then the summer I switched to working in a factory, So I knew coming to college I didn’t want any part in either one of those, so I took the job at the YMCA working with the kids.
