There are many characteristics of a controlled environment. But there are mainly four that make up a controlled environment. They are a status hierarchy in the environment, depersonalization, adjustment, and institutionalization. A controlled environment that we have observed was through a movie called, “One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest”. This movie was about a man that was institutionalized and it shows all of the four main characteristics of a controlled environment. Status hierarchy is the main part of a controlled environment. The definition of a status hierarchy is a rank a person has based on position and status. Status hierarchies are close to everywhere. At jobs, at school and even in a prison amongst prisoners. In the movie the person shown to be at the top of the hierarchy was Nurse Ratched. She was the head nurse of the ward. Depersonalization in this instance is when someone is completely striped of there personality and their identity. This is very common in prison and in other places such as the mental institution in the movie. When someone is depersonalized it makes them easy to control because they eventually just fall in line with everyone else. Whenever someone comes into contact with something new, such as a new place to live and in this case prison, they go through an adjustment time. This is the time when they get used to their new lives, and their new surroundings. In the movie Mac was having a hard time adjusting from prison life to life in a mental institution. Once he learned how everything worked he eventually started to learn how to take advantage of the system. But in the real world people usually learn how to adjust. It might take a long time to adjust or someone might adjust quick. It all depends on the
