Lautenberg Amendment The Lautenberg Amendment states that if a person is convicted/charged with a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, the person is prohibited to ever own/buy firearms. As a result, the act has impacted people in different ways. In the first place, the act has a positive impact on police officers who respond to domestic violence calls because police officers can be protected from volatile situations where the abuser can harm the police officers and the victim with a firearm. This act also has a negative effect on police officers convicted of domestic violence because police officers cannot longer use/handle/carry firearms. Consequently, they won’t be able to continue working in the police institution. Police officers need to carry firearms in order to fulfill a requirement in their job. If abusers have access to guns, it is more likely that victims are killed. Thus, the victims cannot wait until their abusers are convicted of domestic violence in order to protect themselves. However, this plan faces some challenges including that some victims of domestic violence return to their abusers. Another challenge is that some people might be innocent during the arrest or from the accusation. Regardless of the challenges, I still believe that the proposed expansion would be successful because there are many cases of domestic violence where the abusers are not convicted. When the abusers go back to live with their partners, they are more likely to harm their partners and caused serious injury, especially if they have access to firearms. I believe that you do not need to be convicted of domestic violence to have your gun rights taken
