Hardworking, creative and committed would best describe the performer and director, Stella Adler. Stella Adler is best known for her work in theatre, acting and creating her own theater called “Stella Adler Theatre Studio”. You could say when Adler was born on February 10th 1901, she was meant to act because she started preforming at the age of 4. As a teen she starred in many productions throughout the U.S, Europe and South America which led to her career. When she was around 30 years old she was casted in a Broadway show then was led to be the co-founder of The Group Theater. From her 30’s to 40’s she was in movies such as “Love on Toast”. She also believed that actors needed to bring a script to life by using their imagination and tools while having discipline. Adler used 5 basic principles in her studio which included, the development of independent actors, the power of pure imagination, the importance of action, script interpretation and the cultivation of a rich humanity. Adler believed that acting became exciting if the actors did their own thinking in their work. The power of imagination is that the actor’s imagination is the most powerful source they can use in their acting. Stella told her students to use their imagination to have the motivation to act. Action was very important to Stella because she said that acting depends on your actions and how it creates dramatic events while performing. Script interpretation is where the actors did not just read lines they put emotion into their acting and used their imagination in what they are doing. Script interpretation also means the actor is showing the characters environment and setting of the play. The cultivation of rich humanity to Adler is where the actors connect with the world when acting, emotionally, culturally and historically. These 2 productions were on Broadway which is a very important accomplishment in theater. The first production is “Manhattan Nocturne” in 1943 then “Sunday Breakfast” in 1952. Adler also had many roles like in “Sons and Soldiers”, “Pretty Little Parlor”, and “He Who Gets Slapped”. All of these productions are very important because they show how hard working and dedicated Stella was to theater and acting.
