Religious Views on Stem Cell Research The controversy over Stem Cell research has been going on for years. One of the causes for controversy is religious views on harvesting Embryos for research. Since many religions are pro-life most religions are against stem cell research. Even though most religions don’t agree with stem cell research some agree with it since it can help many people. While a few religions agree with it many go against it due to reincarnation, life starting at contraception, and the harvesting of embryos. To understand why some religions disagree with Stem Cell research we need to know what Stem Cells are. Stem Cells are cells that don’t have a specific function yet. As long as the Stem Cells are being used for therapeutic purposes to help people with serious illnesses (Religious Groups Official Positions on Stem Cell Research, 1). They also fully support Somatic Stem Cells because they can help people just as much as Embryonic Stem Cells.
The United Methodist church Supports Embryonic Stem Cell research and therapeutic cloning with a few regulations (Religious Groups Official Positions on Stem Cell Research, 1 ). They believe that it is morally wrong to make Embryos to just destroy them. However they do allow the use of Embryos that would be discarded anyways and as long as they are used to help cure diseases (Ethics of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, 1). The United Methodist Church also thinks that Somatic Stem Cell research is acceptable for therapeutic purposes. The United Church of Christ is in favor of Embryonic Stem Cell research. They believe it is morally acceptable to use Embryos that would get thrown away and not used (Religious Groups Official Positions on Stem Cell Research,1).
