Stem Cell Research Stem cells are the subject of controversy around the world, from Planned Parenthood to 60 Minutes Investigation they have stirred the conversation of their ethical stance. Even though stem cell research is conducted in the United States it is considered illegal to use them (Pelley). Stem cells provide the medical field new discoveries, but the fraud involved in them outweighs the pros that researchers have brought up. Stem Cells are considered very dangerous if they fall into the wrong hand. Also if medical professionals do not know how to use stem cells, there could be deadly consequences. According to the Center for Disease Control and Food and The Drug Administration they stated that stem cells have no evidence or proof yet that they can be used on humans or cure diseases (Holt 5). The Center for Disease Control says that stem cells have no proof or evidence to show what they can or will be able to cure in the human body with recent research (Holt 5). Lastly, many groups hope to be able to de-fund or boycott medical facilities that practice fetal stem cell research. One member from the group Defund Planned Parenthood says. “Planned Parenthood is selling unborn baby parts as if they were a piece of an old car, what posses people to do this and not expect criticism unless they are hiding something they aren't willing to show the public” (La Ganga 3). ABC’s 60 Minutes dove into the illegal side of stem cells. They realized con-men are using fake websites to get personal gain from people's disease and false hope in stem cells. Scott Pelly of 60 Minutes took a look into the fraud that is now involved in stem cells. 60 Minutes followed a family with cerebella cerebral palsy and investigated how they were targeted by online black market stem cell sellers (Pelly). Stem cells are declared illegal for human use, and the only country that allows the use is South America. Stem cells are sold on fake research companies websites and range from $10,000 to $50,000 for 25mL of stem cell solution (Pelly). They took a deeper look at the stem cells they bought and realized that only 10% of the sample was live stem cells and that it would be deadly if they infected that solution into any living organism (Pelly). The 60 Minutes Undercover videos started an FBI investigation regrading the fraudulent activity in this research. According to a new FBI case against two former doctors that have had their medical license revoked, these doctors took 2 million dollars and will likely face 30-60 years in federal prison (Pelly). 60 Minutes investigation brought more evidence to the stem cell case, and also brought more criticism into the stem cell
