Acts whether careless or unintended can have consequences that can forever change a life. One such event began on the early morning of June 1, 1995. The man many have grown to love as Superman had fallen victim to an ill-fated accident while horseback riding leaving him paralyzed. Could Stem Cells have returned Christopher Reeves back to Superman? Stem Cells are one of the leading departments studied in the medical field for cures and treatments for a variety of diseases. Stem cells are cells in multicellular organisms that go through cellular division to replenish and then to adapt into specialized cells. These adaptive cells will turn into any cell an organism needs to survive including red blood cells, nerve cells, and even cells in the brain. In Neal Shusterman’s novel “Unwind” kids between thirteen and eighteen can be signed up for unwinding by their parent or legal guardian. This experimentation, however, has caused a controversy in ethical issues. Many people believe that embryonic stem cell research is very unethical for it uses the embryo of a soon to be child for its studies. Many people against abortion feel that this goes hand in hand for it takes the embryo of what was to be a child in the future. Others believe that this embryo research is neccesarry to help prolong the lives of those who are already living. In the novel “Unwind” they used the unwinding process to prolong life with organ donation as they are attempting to do with stem cells. In the book, people had an ethic problem with unwinding because it still takes the kids from their bodies. “Of course, if more people had been organ donors, unwinding never would have happened ... but people like to keep what is theirs, even after they are dead. It didn't take long for ethics to be crushed by greed.”(Shusterman
