Stem Cells Are The Future of Medicine
Little did Jason Slawson know, that stem cells were going to help turn his life around. Ten years ago, Jason had a roof accident and suffered from a spinal injury that paralyzed him. He went into depression for ending up in a wheelchair, unable to walk. After he heard about stem cells and how they could either change his future in a positive or negative way, Jason decided to take the risk. After undergoing the stem cell therapy, Jason was able to move from a wheelchair to walking with the aid of a cane. Today, doctors use donors’ organs to treat patients, who are in need of organ transplants. The patient's body can reject the organ if the prescribed medication is not taken regularly. The whole procedure can be expensive and not affordable to everyone. If doctors could replace the defective organ with a new one, which is developed by replicating the original organ, the process could be cheaper and extend the life of the patient without any complications. “Stem cells could potentially be used to grow a particular type of tissue or organ if directed to differentiate in a certain way” (Medical News Today). Thus, with adequate research on stem cells, there is a possibility that the organs can be replicated to replace the defective ones. Stem cells have greater potential to fix or grow organs and tissues. In tissues, they can replenish other cells as long as the organism is alive (National institutes of health). In adulthood, the body cannot fully repair some broken bones or torn tissue. In which case, stem cells could be used to repair the parts that cannot be self healed.
