Ao and Po, symbolizing light and darkness, are eternal, while the land, beings, and night/day cycles are created. Creation was planned, initiated by Ku, the Creator, who began chanting to separate Ao from Po. Ku is responsible for creation, first separating Ao from Po and then creating beings and the earth. The main elements of the universe include light (Ao), darkness (Po), earth, and beings. The purpose of this story is to explain the duality of the universe, with light and darkness representing male and female principles. Maori (New Zealand) Creation Myth: Rangi and Papa Before creation, Rangi (Father Sky) and Papa (Mother Earth) existed, pressed together in darkness.
