Arguably the most famous living scientist in the world today, Stephen W. Hawking is best known for his theories on the perplexing concepts of black holes. His many accomplishments have led to him become an inspiration to many outside of the scientific community as well by overcoming his severe physical limitations after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or more commonly known as ALS. Stephen Hawking has said his goal “is the complete understanding of the universe and why it is or why it even exists.” A blend of unwavering resolve and determination mixed with his incomparable work ethic to fulfill his goal, has justified the comparisons between Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking. Born into an academic family both parents received degrees from Oxford. His father Frank Hawking, was head of the Division of Parasitology at the National Institute of Medical Research. Isobel Hawking studied economics, politics and philosophy but did not end up taking a position in her field. At the age of 17 Stephen attended Oxford college receiving his degree in natural sciences.
