Authors use many literary elements of tone to demonstrate the overall tone they want to be shown to the reader. The story, “The Contents of a Dead Man’s Pockets”, is filled with these elements. Through the use of this, the author exposes the tone and their other goals in the story. The story uses diction, imagery, and details most frequently and are the key elements to understanding the tone of the story. Diction is an element of tone which describes the author’s words and their feelings towards something.
When living during war isn’t an option, the only choice one can make is to remain firm against death. The Book Thief, written by Markus Zusak, takes place in 1939 Nazi Germany, where millions of people are killed on the battlefield, in concentration camps, or from starvation and disease. The character Death narrates the novel, taking each person’s soul from their body as they die. Following the main character, Lisel Meminger, Death tells a story of the horrors of war that take place in Germany, and how death affects everyone around Liesel. Death is a trustworthy narrator whose abilities both separate him from a human narrator and allow him to narrate The Book Thief without outside influence.
I think that death ends The Book Thief by saying, “I am haunted by humans,” because of the hatred and malice that humans possess. Firstly, on page 491, death describes how he was the one who served Hitler most faithfully, since he was always collecting millions of souls during Hitler’s reign, simply because there were some people that Hitler disliked and thought should be killed. This shows how hostile the human race can be, proving death’s point. Another detail that supports this statement is the Jew parades. The Jewish people are led through the town, on their way to Concentration Camps, and if any townsperson tries to offer help to them, they are brutally whipped and beaten, while other Nazi supporters stand on the sidewalks and cheer and
Hordes of flesh eating murderers move slowly towards a defenseless white girl, she has nowhere to run, seemingly out of nowhere, a black man comes to the rescue as a white family ignores the obvious screams for help from the other side of a door. This exact situation occurs in the film Night of the Living Dead, and although he does everything he can, the main character, Ben, still ends up shot by the people that are supposed to protect him. Throughout the movie there is a prevalence of rebellion and aggression towards Ben due to nothing other than the color of his skin. Through the actions of Ben and those around him in their struggle for survival, racism is shown as an extremely prevalent issue. Mr. Cooper feels threatened by Ben which causes
Racism was evident throughout Night of the Living Dead, mostly being seen through the actions of those around Ben and the plotline of the movie, leaving the viewer shocked and surprised, not only by the ending, but also from the racism that Ben had to go through, even in a life or death
Discoveries often offer up new understandings of ourselves and the world we live in. To what extent is this reflected in your core text and at least one other text of your own choosing? Through discoveries, we can learn new things about ourselves and the world around us. This is effectually conveyed in the poetry of Robert Frost.
You truly don’t know what you have until it’s gone. Everyday things are taken for granted. In “The Book Thief” It shows incredible examples of how loss transforms you for the better. “The Book Thief” Written by Markus Zusak is a novel based on Nazi-Germany during post World War 2. It Features the scary truth along with harsh humor, The story is told through the eyes of brave, Jewish girl named Liesel.
Throughout the Gothic texts we have read, I have been able to analyze how Gothicism relates to fear and anxiety. The story, Sir Dominick’s Bargain is a great example of Gothicism. The anxiety that is accumulated by the main character throughout the story gives the reader a glimpse of the great depths of Gothicism, and the dark, hidden meaning that directs the story. Sir Dominick’s mysterious encounter with the gentleman and his approval for a bargain that will last seven years shows the desperate attempt to obtain all the riches he craves. Another example is the story, Shalken the Painter, where Le Fanu combines fear and horror into one story.
The Graveyard Book Theme The theme of the text, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is that fate and free will are apart of life and we need to embrace them. Neil Gaiman weaves this throughout his novel by showing how Bod is destined to fight the Jacks. He somehow gets lead to the graveyard where he meets people like Mr. and Mrs. Owens that take care of him. Thousands of years ago someone predicted Bod would defeat the Jacks.
“O, wonder! How many goodly creatures are there here! How beauteous mankind is! O brave new world, That has such people in't!” John grows up in a society that is much different from the World State.
Cooties was a rough start but a smooth finish. I really enjoy the standard zombie survival portion, but the lead in felt like to took forever. Which it really doesn't, it just feels that way. I've seen comparisons between this and Zombieland. Out of the two, Zombieland is far and away the better film.
It was about a woman who firsts find her husband who died recently at her doorstep (MacNabb, 2012). After that she notices more people rising from the grave. Interestingly enough the zombies are not the traditional human devouring, brain eating ravenous simpletons. Actually, they hold conversations with woman as they pass by her house. One day she notices many zombies walking past her house on the way to Washington D.C. to march and protest.
When you think of a zombie, what comes to mind? To most people a zombie is a cannibalistic creature that rises from the dead and is often linked with diseases. In the film Night of the Living Dead this is exactly what we get. The zombies are the main element of horror in this film and this is what holds our attention. Whereas in the film I Walked With a Zombie, the true terror is not being killed by zombies, but of becoming a zombie oneself.
