Let me start off by saying this: The Shining by Stephen King is the scariest and most terrifying book I have ever read. My favorite time and place to read is usually in my room before I go to bed. Not for this novel. I had to read this book during the daytime to insure that I had no nightmares the following evening. The Shining takes place in a haunted place named, “The Overlook Hotel” in the extremely isolated Colorado Rockies. The main characters of the fictional book are all a part of the Torrance Family. Their names are Jack, Wendy, and Danny. This family goes through happy times, sad times, and scary moments. Basically, they go through everything you could imagine. If you’re an avid Stephen King reader, The Shining is similar to many of his other horror books such as It, Cujo, The Green Mile, The Stand, The Dead Zone. Jack Torrance, father of Danny, wife of Wendy, takes a job to look over and take care of the “Overlook Hotel” throughout the winter. Jack Torrance is known for being an aggressive person, partially because of his brutal case of alcoholism. The decision to take the job in the Rockies was a great decision until they soon figured out that the “Overlook Hotel” was haunted. As the book moves along, a hotel worker discovers that Danny Torrance, son of Jack and Wendy, has a power to make things “shine.” His “shine allows him to see things that are not real and that no one else around him are able to see. Further on, Danny’s “shine” starts to really kick in. He sees and hears many peculiar things around the hotel which leads to a variety of conflicts. Danny soons find out that his Dad is not safe and ill. He realizes that he needs to save his Mom and himself from Jack and get out of the hotel before it is too late. Do they escape?
