When an instructor passes out a writing assignment, I do not feel too overwhelmed because I feel like most of the time I am able to get writing assignments done decently. However, writing is not my favorite thing as I can see lots of room for improvement, so I still get a little intimidated by writing assignments. I think one of the biggest issues I have when it comes to writing is punctuation and grammar. There are times when I do not know if I am using things like commas or semicolons the right way, which makes it difficult for people to read my writing smoothly. Throughout this except, King presents a series of logical arguments that appeal to the audience's sense of reason, in order to prove to them that reading is a crucial skill and to encourage them to find time to read. One example of this is when King says, “The real importance of reading is that it creates an ease and intimacy with the process of writing… Constant reading will pull you into a place (a mind-set, if you like the phrase) where you can write eagerly and without self-consciousness” (4). Here, King is arguing that by reading more you will be aiding your writing skills and help establish a much more positive relationship with your writing. This makes sense because it consistently exposes you to the way others write, which will show you what works and what does not. After reading through the essays from Amy Tan, Malcolm X and Stephen King, I was able to learn many new things that shifted my perspective of literacy. I am now able to approach the topic in a more positive manner. Amy Tan took me back to my early struggles with English by sharing her mother's story. I felt personally connected to the story and allowed me to understand that the struggle I had is felt by many people. Tan’s take on this issue allows me to approach my past experience in a less self conscious way. Malcolm X highlights the importance of reading, even if you are yet to be a good reader. I learned that the knowledge obtained by reading has the potential to expand my understanding of the world I live in, allowing me to make more educated decisions. Showing his weaker start to reading ensures he does not lose anyones attention as it demonstrates anyone can benefit from reading, regardless of skill level. Stephen King emphasized the importance of reading in its relation to writing. You can take authors' successful writing and implement it into your own and learn from the mistakes of weak writers.
