Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies explains why he thinks people watch so many horror movies. According to him, everyone is all a little crazy in their own way. There is just a variety of definitions of crazy. There is also a difference between deranged and having a guilty pleasure.
"If we are all insane, then insanity becomes a matter of degree" (Why We Crave Horror Movies). King claims that everyone is insane, but it is just a matter of how much. If everyone were put on a scale of "Talking to Themselves" crazy to "Murder/ Torture" crazy, then everyone would be crazy, just some more than others. This world is filled with more good people than bad that we know of. However, everyone has their own secrets that they keep them hidden. If every secret that everybody has was just laid out on a table, there is no telling how many good people are actually bad. Everyone gets frustrated and really want to hurt someone occasionally, but only a few actually along with it. Take the Saw series for example. The Saw movies are some of the most popular horror movies ever made. Ever since the 2004 release of the original movie, people everywhere waited and hoped for another one. Although considered a horror movie, Saw is more like a torture film. It is not just something with clowns and a murderer. It is multiple people "playing a game" that determines whether they live or die. They are kept for days at a time in some type of contraption that, if they make the wrong choice, can instantly rip their bodies apart.
