Stephen Spielberg's Minority Report

Imagine living in a world where precrime was a way of life and used to help decrease the number of crimes. Naturally, such an invention would cause a struggle with the citizens under effect of this creation. Stephen Spielberg's Minority Report uses cinematic elements such as sound, mise en scéne facial expressions, lighting, and symbolism to depict the theme of struggle between the characters. The scene that shows the characters in conflict with either each other, or themselves is where the main character struggles with himself and another character. Throughout the scene analyzed in this essay, the struggle between John, Agatha and Crow is highlighted by these effects. Minority Report by Stephen Spielberg is set in DC and Northern Virginia

Spielberg placed John at the front of the frame while Crow is further back against the window. His being at the large window now shows that he has an opportunity of some sort, be it to tell the truth, or somehow escape. The director also chose to place a hologram of John's boss behind Crow. He is the one guilty of framing John and making him believe Leo kidnapped and murdered his son. The placement of the hologram and the way John is holding his gun makes it look like John is pointing the gun at his boss, the true culprit. This frame is a foreshadowing to the audience that Crow may not be the one to blame. Leo holds his head back in fear and submission while he begs John to shoot him. John's body is turned away from Leo, showing that he is not fully committed to killing Leo Crow. Again, John is struggling to make a decision, realizing that he still has a choice. 1:46:36 is the moment where John made a decision. The time has passed where, according to his minority report he was supposed to commit a murder. Again his face is shown half dark and half illuminated. He looks as if he has triumphed over the bad in himself and is proud of the decision he made. The broken mirror is in the background showing the windows. It seems as though Johns took advantage of his opportunity to do the right thing and not kill Crow. However, the fact that the glass is broken foreshadows and lets the audience know that he did go against his character and kill
