The main theme throughout the graphic novel American Born Chinese by author Gene Yang is stereotyping and accepting who you are. Throughout the book you see three different characters that struggle with being discriminated for being who they are or how they were raised. Jin is constantly being thrown stereotypes at him by his classmates. The Monkey King is being discriminated against from other gods for who he is. Chin Kee is a literal representation of an Asian stereotype. Throughout the book you see them come to terms with their identity. To begin with, the book first introduces the Monkey King. He was respected by all other monkeys. When he hears news about a gathering he decided he wanted to go. When he got there he had to wait in a line. When he got to the front of the line he was met by a guard who determined who is allowed in. When the guard sees the Monkey King, he refuses to let him in, first because he has no shoes. He then continues to tell him that he cannot enter because he is a monkey. Practically telling him he cannot enter because he is an animal. He is rejected and is angry so he goes on a rampage. He then begins to get bullied by his peers. Later a new character is introduced in Jin’s storyline. Wei-Chen Sun is an immigrant from Taiwan who new to jin’s school. At first Jin doesn’t really like Wei-Chen but they slowly become best friends. In Jin’s storyline there is a lot of racism from his peers. Racism according to merriam webster is “racial prejudice or discrimination.” Farther into the story jin developes a crush on a girl named Amelia who he end up dating. Then a friend of Amelia named greg, tell Jin to break up with her because he doesn't approve and tells him he is not a “good fit.” Because of Jin constantly feeling outcast he spent a lot time trying to fit into the american
