The character Charles Halloway in the story Something Wicked this Way Comes, by Ray Bradbury is a wise man who struggles with doubt within himself while also supporting those around him against the evil that comes in the form of a carnival. Firstly, Charles Halloway is a janitor who works at a library and is depicted in the story as “a man with moon-white hair [and], a man with a winter-apple face”(Bradbury 12).

This topic has been widely studied by many researchers to find a correlation between Asian stereotypes and the effects on them. Asian-American stereotype, also known as “ model minority ”, portrays an Asian as someone that does not comprehend or speak English well, excels academically especially in Mathematics, timid, anti-social ,moral, uptight, and lacks non-verbal knowledge etc. (Zhang 2010).
Mainly this happens when Asian-Americans do not live up to the standards set by the model minority myth. For example, Chia Y. Vang explains that Hmong youth do not often fit into the model minority and, consequently, become “part of the “Other Asian… seen as failed and unlikely Asian-American subjects” merely because they were not high achieving (Vang). This statement alone seems enough to problematize the idea that Asian-Americans must fit into a certain mold to be consider a proper “subject,” whatever that is. Because of this, many Asian-Americans cannot live up to the expectations set for them, and become negatively affected, but this is not always the case. I think that social constructions like media portraying Asians is far from what Asians has to offer. I feel that because of the small or not having Asians or specifically Southeast Asians in mainstream media has pushed me further to understand what it means to be Southeast Asian and Cambodian-American. Also, being classified as Asian and its stereotype of being smart yet being Southeast Asian fell into this category of being the model minority. I think with the surge of gangs and aid in technology, the view of Southeast Asians started to drift from mainstream Asians. Southeast Asians were then called FOB or fresh off the boat.
