In Choplin’s story, “A Pair of Silk Stockings”, she uses examples of stereotypes towards women. The book takes place in a small town home and also at a store. Mrs. Sommers is the main character. She takes care of her family and does a lot of work around the house. Choplin uses different types of stereotypes throughout her short story to show what a typical woman should do. Choplin is also able to evolve the character until someone special by allowing Mrs. Sommers to go out of the box and do something for herself. Most women (back then) wouldn’t imagine stepping out of the box of cooking and cleaning and being a stay at home mom. In this story by Choplin, she has her character step outside the box. First, she had Mrs. Sommers be a stay at home mom. If you think of a perfect woman, she would stay at home. She would watch over her children and also do chores around the house. They are expected to stay at home to cook, clean, and watch the children. Most people would disagree with this now a day because women can do anything they want! In this story, I believe Mrs. Sommers felt the same way as others feel about these typical women stereotypes. She was sick of doing things for others and wanted to finally do something for herself. Mrs. Sommers was able to do something original instead of just following the crowd. Choplin did a very well job of showing the typical stereotypes and then allowed Mrs. Sommers to change and develop into an independent woman. In life, men and women can go out and do anything and accomplish anything they would like to. This allows people to be great in their own ways and aren’t kept in that little box with all these rules and guidelines they have to follow. You don’t need to follow rules and guidelines to be a great person, you go out in the world and do what you want and that’s what will make you
