The storyline unapologetically tackles worldwide issues through Starr’s complex character while discussing topics like racism, police brutality, and the Black Lives Matter movement. In addition to the bold and thought-provoking novel, the overall message of using your voice is tied together with its intimate writing style, complex characters and the novels first-person perspective which taps deeply into Starr’s shock, pain, and outrage during the shooting of her bestfriend and the aftermath. Angie Thomas enables readers to appreciate characters who are so often represented by stereotypes by creating a more elaborate picture of how people end up in gangs or selling drugs. The characters in this books are dynamic, fully formed, and extremely lovable. The characters are bold and relatable that readers grow to care about and become invested in, so when pivotal events occurred, they are moved.
