It is important for people to understand that stereotypes are not correct and you shouldn't judge someone before you have met them. Everyone has been stereotyped at one point, wether they realize it or not. A stereotype is the generalization of a group of people and they affect everyone. Stereotypes can be defined as a general idea of what characteristics a certain type of person or a group of people have and what they represent, and they impact our society in many ways (Stereotypes). For example, in the story, “Desiree’s Baby”, The story relates to the topic of stereotypes because Armand was a slave owner and when they had a kid, the baby came out mixed and so he thought the mom must have been part African American which made him hate her. He got mad and kicked her out of the house just because he thought she must have been African American but at the end he finds a letter from his mom to his dad saying that his mom was African American which means he is mixed. This is evident when the speaker tells us, “He thought Almighty God had dealt cruelly and unjustly with him; and felt, somehow, that he was paying Him back in kind when he stabbed thus into his wife's soul. Moreover he no longer loved her, because of the unconscious injury she had brought upon his home and his name.” (Chopin). This quote shows how society is impacted by stereotypes by revealing how easily someones attitude toward you can change once they start to stereotype you. In addition, in the poem, Labels, The poem is related to stereotypes because the poem is talking about how you can't judge someone by a label but instead you have to get to know them before you judge them.Some evidence that shows this is when the speaker says, “You can’t know me by just a look” (Holbrook). The article, “Insurance, Not Injuries, May Determine Who Goes To Trauma Centers”is about how people without insurance are more likely to be transferred to trauma centers which have more skilled facilities. Babies are also more likely to be transferred to a more skilled facility if they do not have insurance(Varney). According to researchers at Stanford University, “They found that non-trauma facilities were much more likely to admit patients who had insurance, whether it was private insurance or Medicaid coverage, than to transfer the patients to more skilled facilities”
