In television, actress and actors are primarily groomed before-hand to portray the character in which they will be playing. You have to be comfortable, yet naive of common issues within the business playing the part you play and if not the show will ultimately contain a huge amount of scatological jokes and negative behavior. Of all the common assumptions and stereotypes we discussed in class, pimp culture and the glorification of terrible treatment towards women perpetuates the unfair stereotypes within female roles and those who take on female roles. Martin is set in Detroit, where he, his girlfriend Gina and there 3 friends battle everyday with Martins sexist and cocky ways. In one particular episode where Martin shows pimp culture is when they host an annual pimp ball. The ball consisted of the top 4 pimps, with women as the judges for the pimp of the year award. This episode was signifying how since before the 90’s pimp culture was present and it shows how women who knew what was going on in the era decided to act on it in a positive way to ensure they had a job. The episode had many sex symbols such as Pam Grier who was the ultimate sex symbol in the 70’s. Following pimp culture, Martin shows he is sexist when he hosts a radio show where he decides to womanize Gina and state how she does what he tells her to do. Lastly, another that shows prejudice and misogynoir towards women is the fact that light skinned women are always glorified. The idea that light is better is glorified both in Martin and The Wayans Bros. This idea generally allows the producers and co-stars to treat the darker women less and forces her to play the ignorant, snappy roles.
