The “Single Story” of Africa has been told time and time again, changing people’s perception of Africa and spreading traditional western stereotypes worldwide. The danger of the “Single Story” of Africa is it leads people to make automatic assumptions and drawing conclusions that are based off content that is filtered. Majority of the knowledge people have of Africa shown by the perspective of the colonizer, rather than content and knowledge from Africans themselves. Things Fall Apart is a groundbreaking novel by Chinua Achebe that shows both the good and bad of the Ibo culture and follows tragic hero Okonkwo through his life’s journey. Many people view Africa as all one country and fail to recognize the intricate diversity. An example of this from Black Panther are the different tribes in Wakanda which are seen when they all gather for the previously mentioned tradition, and when the counsel of the tribes’ elders is gathered. The tribes all have different traditional clothing, varying traditions, and different leaders within the tribes among other things. This tribal diversity refutes the view that many people share of Africa that is lacks diversity, and that all Africans are the same. In Things Fall Apart, social diversity is prominent when the Christian missionaries are setting up the Church and the first group to join are the outcasts whom are called Osu. They, since the church accepted twins and other abominations, “thought that they would also be received” (155). This shows the Osu, and the rest of the surrounding communities see them as abominations, which is a harsh contrast to the glorified villages in the area. The Osu’s, and their different ways of life, existence shows there is social diversity in Africa. Diana Akers Rhoads’ literary criticism “Culture in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart” she speaks about how neighboring clans to Umuofia try to avoid war with it because it’s “feared as a village and powerful in war”(2).
