People create stereotypes based on race, gender, age, and even a person’s job or hobbies. There are many stereotypes that people have towards hunters. People have many different ideas and opinions of what a hunter looks like or acts like. Many of these stereotypes refer to the look or attitude of a hunter. Many of these thoughts may be true to a certain extent but do not necessarily accurately represent the modern hunter.
One of the main stereotypes of a hunter deals with is the look of a hunter. Oftentimes people perceive hunters as big, burly men with beards over their stomachs. Not to say that those men don’t exist, but they are not what every outdoorsman looks like. These men are perceived to drive to the store in their 10 year old Chevrolet truck before the sun makes its first appearance. They would rather use one of their two buck tags on a deer that is sick or injured so it might not have to suffer any longer. Many hunters will work all spring and summer to improve the habitat for whatever animal they may be pursuing. All of this work may be for nothing as they may not even harvest an animal all year, but they wouldn’t mind because the animals benefitted from their efforts. This is the attitude that every hunter should have, however there are a few bad apples who cause non-hunters to believe these negative reputations that hunters have donned over the years. People will always create stereotypes. Blondes aren’t smart. Women can’t drive. White men can’t jump. These are just a few examples of better known stereotypes. There are, however, stereotypes that refer to hunters and outdoorsmen.
