Did you know one in four children in America group up without learning how to read? (dosomething.org 2016). In “Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, he talks about how he taught himself to read. Alexie is an American Indian and is known as being a smart Indian. According to Alexie, American Indian children are stereotyped to be dumb and who are the students that sit in the back of the classroom not answering questions. Alexie changes the odds and became a writer to save American Indians children lives, by showing them that they can do anything they put their minds to. In order to understand why Alexie is trying to save stereotyping in American Indian children and letting them believe they can do anything, one needs to consider that Americans must stop stereotyping, that children need to believe in themselves, and also find outlets to forget about the problems one could have.

Finally, I think that all American student need to find outlets for their problems. Alexie tells the readers the he would read all the time, in the car, in the classroom, he will read anything and everything. “I read anything that have words and paragraphs” (496). Alexie would read to save his life, that was his only purpose. Alexie described reading as an escape to get away from his problems of being stereotyped as an American Indian. If an American Indian student found an outlet maybe they would try in school because they could forget out the stereotyping that happens. My outlet would be running, it is my form of escape to forget about everything that is going on in my life. While I’m running I feel free to forget the stress of school and forget about the drama with friends.
