In professional sports, players are always trying to be their best, whether this is by training hard, eating on a strict diet, or even losing weight. However, when things get overboard and fame gets to their heads, they turn to illegal substances to enhance their athletic performance. Athletes believe they can get away with it, despite the consequences they know they will be faced with.They do not imagine the consequences faced until it occurs to them. “Now they take pills. Pills to sleep. Pills to wake up. Pills to ease pain. Pills to amp up. Getting them online” (Shanahan, 2016). The effects from steroid withdrawal are very sudden and could be life-changing. This could range from a mild flu, to weakness, fatigue, abdominal pain to even weight loss. The list continues, but making one choice to take steroids could change your future forever. “Thus, steroid use cannot be stopped abruptly. Tapering the drug gives the adrenal glands time to return to their normal patterns of secretion.”(Kamenstein, 2015) As stated by Mr. Kamenstein (2015), if steroids were to be discontinued all of a sudden, it would leave a significant impact on the adrenal glands, which produce essential hormones for survival. In addition to the withdrawal symptoms, continuous exercise is also needed when the use of steroids is halted. If not, then the body will begin feeling “dizzy, lightheaded, tired, have stomach pain and body aches.” (www.familydoctor.org, 2014) As a result, steroids must be slowly tapered with over as long as months, or they will be continuously abused.
