In English we are reading a book about a court case called “Monster” by Walter Dean Myers. The book is about a boy fighting for his freedom in court. That boys name is Steve Harmon. Today my job is to convince you that not only is Steve Harmon is not guilty, but he is , completely innocent. My job is to convince you that everything said against him is well within the area of reasonable doubt. To give to you the testimony of a woman who has no reason to lie and is saying he wasn’t there. And finally to prove he had absolutely no connection to the crime at all. First of, all of the people who testify against steve are all criminals with heavy jail time to do. She is the only witness with no reason to lie. When asked if she recognizes anyone she points to james king. “The gentleman sitting at that table was one of the men arguing.” she says. But if steve was the lookout and entered the store then there is no way she wouldn’t of noticed. Another thing to consider is that Steve got no profit from this robbery. When asked who else the money went to bobo said: “When we discovered the guy was dead we decided to lay low”. He says later that steve got no money. If he did they could trace it, but he didn’t. Because there was no transaction, there is nothing linking steve to this crime. Now, one thing that doesn’t help prove his innocence is that we don’t know where he was during the robbery. When asked about his location he states: “ I don’t know exactly where I was when the robbery took place…”And it doesn’t help that the only people who testify to his location are saying that he was involved in the robbery. But as previously stated, everyone who testifies against him has reason to lie and everything they say is within the realm of reasonable
