When you hear the word Apple what do you think of? Prior to 1976, almost everyone would think of the fruit. In today’s day and age, everyone’s mind quickly jumps to the massive computer company. From humble beginnings to one of the largest and most well-known companies in the world, Apple Inc. has made a great impact on today’s society and has shaped technology as we know it. Believe it or not, Apple was started in the small garage of Steve Jobs childhood home. Jobs and his friends, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne created a company that became a keystone element in the growth and foundation of the Information Age. Instead of just a motherboard, the Apple II included a hard plastic case, a keyboard, and color graphics. The Apple II was displayed at the West Coast Computer Faire and received a great deal of attention. By the time the Apple III was released, Apple was a widely recognized company with thousands of employees. Unfortunately, Wozniak was injured in a plane crash, he suffered temporary amnesia and lots of facial and back damage. He saw this as a time to leave the company, but he still receives a stipend of Apple’s profits. With all of its success, Apple kept expanding. By 1984, Apple launched the Macintosh, a $500 personal computer. Steve Jobs was in a longstanding argument with John Sculley, Apple’s CEO, because Sculley was claiming that Jobs was too power hungry and out of control. Apple’s employees sided with Sculley, which led Jobs to resign. It wasn’t until 1997 that Jobs returned to Apple. The company really took off again with the return of Jobs. Apple succeeded in bringing the first personal computer to homes of families everywhere. Before Apple, people would have never dreamed that someone could own a computer in their own home. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak made this dream a reality. With the creation of Apple’s iPod, music became very accessible. The iPod’s predecessor, the Walkman, was as device where you could put tapes and eventually CD’s into it and listen to music. The iPod digitized portable music, so all one has to do is download songs to their iPod and they can listen to whatever they please. Apple has also shaped the information age especially with the creation of the iPhone. Apple’s iPhone has drastically changed how our society functions. The iPhone along with the other smartphones that came after, grants access to endless information and communication in just the palm of one’s hand. Before the iPhone, books were the go-to resource for learning new things. Now the we have the whole internet at our fingertips. Researchers agree that this plethora of accessibility has both positive and negative effects. Communication is now much more simpler than it was in the past, and the cellular data that comes with many smartphone plans allows people to be constantly in-touch with friends, family, and emergency services.
