Tragic heroes are characters that make judgement errors that leads to their downfall or destruction. The tragic love story of Romeo and Juliet is a prime example of a tragic hero. Shakespeare portrayed Romeo and Juliet as victims that captured the audience's hearts. The book Inherit the wind written by Jerome Lawrence, and Robert E. Lee, is no love story, and the main character Matthew Harrison Brady is no Romeo; however Brady does meet Aristotle's criteria to be considered a tragic hero.
Heroes have appeared in all cultures throughout history. Joseph Campbell, expert mythologist, presents two types of heroes based on the hero deed. The spiritual hero, such as Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, and Moses, gains insight and shares it with the people. The physical hero, such as Gandhi, Martin Luther King, and Mother Theresa, sacrifices himself for a cause, another individual or a people. Anthony Burns is a hero because he possessed the hero qualities of wisdom, courage, and self-sacrifice to perform the hero deed of creating a movement against slavery and freedom for all slaves.
The tragic hero is defined as, "a literary character who makes an error of judgment or has a fatal flaw that, combined with fate and external forces, brings on a tragedy." (Web). There are many tragic heroes in literature. A good example of a tragic hero is John Proctor, from Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. John Proctor is a farmer living a simple life in a Puritan town with his wife and children.

In this play Romeo is the tragic hero because he fits all of the criteria of a tragic, hero, his flaws lead to his destruction some of those being emotionally driven, he is impulsive and immature. The first reason why Romeo is a tragic hero is that he is emotionally driven.

Throughout the play The Crucible, John Proctor shows that he is a tragic hero. Although he is a hero, we see this in both good and bad ways. John is seen as a devil worshipper when he says, “I hear the boot of Lucifer, I see his filthy face!”(119-120) He says this because he is now being the one accused of having seen the devil and this was his way of responding. It seems to make everyone think that he is evil because he is saying how he has seen that devil and that it was Danforth that he saw.
The current day world is filled to the brim with technology. This technology continues to increase in complexity with time and causes the people who use these technologies to always be adapting to the changing times. However, this new technology has to have come from the brains of someone. These people who create these technologies are often praised and called heroes due to their achievements that improve society. One such hero is Steve Jobs.

However, Okonkwo does have few traits of tragic hero.
