In the novel The Remains of the Day, a butler, named Stevens, is given an order to fire his father and appoint him to a new job with less responsibilities. The relationship of the son towards his father is illustrated through the use of hesitation and a caring tone, while his father expresses a detached relationship with the way he speaks to his son. Devices such as imagery, symbolism, critical diction, and point of view are used to enhance the relationship between the two and reveal the true characters emotions. In the beginning of the excerpt when Stevens is on his way to deliver the news to his father imagery such as “struck by the smallest and starkness of it...the pale early light as with the size of the room or the bareness of its walls,”
