The film “Stevie” illustrates the life of a young man named Stevie whose life was recorded months prior to his sentencing as a sexual offender. The film demonstrates Stevie’s emotional struggles that have been influenced by his dysfunctional childhood as well as some of his relatives that surrounded him. The film’s main theme was child abuse. Steve’s victim was physically abused, the girl was emotionally and physically damaged. Her mother describes that her daughter did not want to sleep on her bedroom and that she became a very fearful person. Another important theme in the film was rejection. The main reason why Stevie hated his mother and blamed all his failures and mistakes was because he felt rejected by her throughout his entire childhood. He felt that had she been with him, his life would have been different. Throughout the film, Stevie’s mother tried to reestablish the relationship with Stevie by being on his side before his sentencing. Moreover, another theme that stood out was mental health. The film did not fully address Stevie’s sexual abuse crime. It did not interview anyone more than the mother to state the clear evidence of the crime. Personally, the film would have been more neutral if a doctor, or other professional had talked in more depth about the case. Besides that, the film showed the side of the story that many do not see in any criminal case. Stevie’s family structure, girlfriend and his own daily life was shown. This demonstrated the environment in which he grew up in, which becomes very important to understand his behavior.
