What changes occurred in the Western United States during the late 1800s? In the late 1800s, the U.S. expanded to the western part of the country which brought on tremendous change through migration and development. Before the time period which became known as the Western Expansion, the majority of the American people lived east of the Great Plains. One example of a significant event in U.S. History was the Homestead Act. The Homestead Act of 1862 was an act passed by the federal government to encourage settlement in the west. The act permitted settles to buy a plot of 160 acres for a small fee if they occupied the land they purchased for five years and improved it. The act was significant because it was seen the drive for westward expansion and it also assisted in the rapid development of the west. The next significant event was the Railroad Strike of 1877.

In the early 1800s, the south—and most of the north, for that matter—used a subsistence economy, where crops and goods were made locally by families for themselves and their communities. Family farms were basically forced to use a subsistence economy, simply because the lack of fast transportation. If they attempted to ship their crops to other ports and towns where it was needed, the crops would rot well before they ever made it. In the south, cotton was made using slave labor, but the harvests weren’t as large as they could be. The process of harvesting was slow—as it was with many crops across the north and south—and the wield was decent.
Early Art in Relation to Death and the Afterlife Death has been a force that looked upon with reverence, awe, and curiosity since the cycle of life and death began. Early cultures such as the Etruscans, Egyptians, Asante, Chinese and Tibetans used art to help them with the process. American Women in the Late 1800’s Were married American women in the late 1800’s expected to restrict their sphere of interest to the home and the family? In the late 1800’s women were second-class citizens. Women were expected to limit their interest to the home and family. Women were not encouraged to obtain a real education or pursue a professional career. After marriage, women did not have the right to own their own property, keep their own wages, or sign a contract.
From the 1800’s to the 20th century, women had gained a lot more independence than they had before. In the year 1777 when voting started to become more relevant, women were decided not to be allowed to be apart of voting, unlike now in the 21st century where women are allowed to vote. From the beginning of the 18th century, women were discriminated against until the middle of the 18th century. After the mid-1750’s, women started to gain more ground on rights and things that they were more freely allowed to do. Women slowly started to gain more ground on things to do such as being guaranteed equal pay starting from the year 1872 to current present time.
During the ancient times many cultures and races viewed art as something important for their lifestyles and part of their culture. Portraiture was one of the often used forms of art that either represented someone who once lived or a god that they worshipped. These forms of art were really important for various reasons, whether it was for worship, remembrance of the person or god, remembrance of an important day, tomb markers, etc. Three examples of portraitures made during the ancient times are: ‘Victory Stele of Naram-sin’, ‘Hatshepsut with Offering Jars’, and ‘Khafre Enthroned’. Each of these three pieces of art played a big role on the lives of the owners because it depicted them in the way that they wanted to be depicted.

This might not seem as a technological advancement, but back in the 19th century, it was. This was because the material used to make the canvas were stronger, and harder.
