Heroes: Fighting for the Small Guy What are heroes, exactly? To I a hero is a man or woman shaped by the values around them, to reflect the people's way of thinking and safeguard what they believe. None other than, the classic hero of old, Beowulf and the Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, the modern hero who safeguards the rights of the people against their oppressors. Both Beowulf and Queen embody and embrace the timeless values of bravery, selflessness, humility, and caring.

National correspondent, Linton Weeks, in his essay, “Heroic Acts to Protect the word Hero”, Argues how the word hero has lost its meaning due to its overuse. Weeks’ purpose is to show how overused, and dismissed the word hero is. He creates a rational argument to prove his view to the reader that the widespread use of the term hero has gotten out of hand. While a majority of people have adapted to the current use for the definition of hero, Weeks makes some unignorable statements that support his claim of “hero” being over used.
After careful examination of the article, “Where I Find My Heroes” authored by Oliver Stone, it became apparent that Stone uses the rhetorical devices of examples and imagery to help convey his definition of a hero. To help portray his image of a hero, Stone provides examples of heroes all throughout his lifetime. For example, he later stated that as a child, “My heroes were always people like George Washington and General Custer and Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Men, generally, and doers” (Stone 1). Then as he talks about what he believes fits the definition of a hero now, one can see that he has mentally evolved to that of someone who should be honored for sacrifices made, not actions that led them to fame.
The definition of heroism changes with the context, time, and point of view. The archetype of heroism is defined as someone who is strong, intelligent, brave, and daring. A hero usually has some type of supernatural power that helps them combat a malicious villain or force. Heroes of the past are not essentially heroes of the present, and vice versa. Upon closer and more personal consideration, many more qualities of what makes a hero become evident.

This illustration gives kids the unrealistic desire to be this kind of hero, which will soon let them down when they realize people can’t fly, lift cars, or shoot webs. The dictionary’s definition of a hero is a person who is worshiped and well known for his or her outstanding achievements, also giving an inaccurate definition. A famous person who donated money to a charity or a supernatural being should not be named a hero for these actions because according to John Greenleaf Whittier, “One brave deed does not make a hero.”
“A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something that is bigger than oneself,” a quote from Joseph Campbell an American author. This very quote is the essence of how one defines a hero. In To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee, the protagonist, Jean-Lousie “Scout” Finch, navigates the difficulties of living in the south during the great depression as a child. The same child’s father is assigned the case of defending Tom Robinson, an African American, from the accusation of rape. The protagonist, Atticus Finch, in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, is a great hero because he does not demand admiration, he puts Tom Robinson’s life above his, and because he brings people together when faced with adversity.
