In 2013, New York passed a law restricting soda quantities. They limited the largest amount of soda people could buy was 16 ounces. Later, the New York State overturned the law. This outraged many Americans, causing them to state their opinions. The article “Ban the Ban!” is the most convincing argument because it's persuasive, it provides the effects of the ban, and it has more factual evidence. Persuasive words and phrases are used in “Ban the Ban!” resulting in the reader leaning towards being against the ban. The author says things like “You have now removed my rights” and “This is not what this country is about” (Stone 2). In these statements, she is showing how the ban is wrong and that she doesn’t support it and what it's doing. “It is about freedom and the freedom to make your own decisions” (Stone 4). After saying this, she shows how this is a true statement and proves her side. She talks about how it goes against what this country stands for and how from then on it’s a “slippery slope,” which is all very true. “What I do not respect is having my civil liberties stripped away” (Stone 1). In this paragraph, Stone is showing what her rights are as an American citizen and how they are actually being affected in the real world because of this ban. In the article, she reflects on things like our human rights and freedoms as citizens of the United States. She shows how everything relates back to those simple things and how they will be changed in the long run. She is providing her reader with evidence form her own life, showing how it could affect theirs as well. Some may say that “Three Cheers for Nanny State” also provides factual evidence. While this may be true, it doesn’t provide facts that the reader can relate to and that benefit them like “Ban the Ban!”
