One of the most important causes of the Stono rebellion was cruel treatment of African American slaves. During the time of slavery, it was common for white slave owners to beat, whip, overwork, rape, starve and neglect their slaves. Slaves lost all their natural rights, they had no control over the amount of food, water or clothing they got. Every slave was malnourished and dehydrated, the only got loafs of bread and scraps of meat. Many of those slaves used their very little amounts of water and combined them with the scraps of meat to form soup and broths to soak up into the very dry and stale bread. Many times, slaves would have to steal extra servings of food in order to make it by and survive. Another primary source document from the textbook “Freedom on My Mind: A History of African Americans” discusses the physical abuses David George and his family faced while enslaved. George states “My oldest sister was called patty; I have seen her several times so whipped that her back has been all corruption, as though it would rot.” This story shows how common it was for enslaved individuals to be whipped and beaten on a regular basis. These types of cruel punishment were very common during the time slavery existed and almost all enslaved people were abused by their masters constantly throughout their life.
