Setting the Stage for Success
Many people believe a person?s childhood will determine their adulthood. A person raised in a loving household will grow up to be kind and successful. A person who enjoys math class as a child will get a job using math frequently. Harryhausen and Burton both grew up in southern California and went on to revolutionize film and animation. Beginning at a young age, he experimented and created his own work. He attended Manual Arts High School were he began to refine his artistic abilities. He recalls sketching nude models to perfect proportion and speed. (Harryhausen and Dalton, 2006, p. 6) Drawing is the basis for animation. An animator must draw out models or draw a series of images making drawing an essential part of animation. Later on, Harryhausen would attend institutions to further master his art. A few examples are the University of Southern California, the Art Students League in New York, and the Arts Center in Los Angeles. At these institutions he would study anatomy of humans and animals, sculpture, and film production. Burton?s parents did not nurture his interests and left him to find his own way. Never the less, he did find a driving force in none other than Ray Harryhausen. Harryhausen was Burton?s very first inspiration. Burton credits Harryhausen as the person who drove him to make animations over other film techniques.
