Story of an hour Kate Chopin, author of “Story of an hour” is recognized for a majority of seminal feminist stories and novels. This story is an example of such text. Within the story, Chopin discusses many points that are related to feminism, including the will power and manifestation of a woman’s rare personality different from the personality of her spouse and the right of a woman to recognize and undergo her very own curiosity. This is articulated through the language in Chopin’s story used to illustrate Mrs. Mallard’s feelings as she fluctuates between detachment and extreme happiness at her recent freedom. There are many occasions of playful or ironic uses of selected phrases or images to deliver Mrs. Mallard’s excitement in “Story of an hour” and the essential message that marriage is compelling. In multiple occasions, the fact that Louise croaks in the end of a meek “heart disease” is symbolic of the “disease” of their marriage. Much like a burden, Louise cannot feel exempt unless her spouse is no longer around. The tragedy affecting her fragile heart opposed to other portions of her body shows that her despair from this significant disease originated from something within her; therefore the reader can conclude that it is nothing external. The narrator correlates on the quote, “and yet she loved him-sometimes. Often she did not.” This direct language is used only to illustrate the things Mrs. Mallard is not emotional about; hence the uncovered language would hint that she did not have any fierce emotions for her husband. When Mrs. Mallard’s feelings are expressed regarding something she is ecstatic about, the language suddenly becomes active and vivid with vibrant and colorful images.
