The “Story of an Hour” is by Kate Chopin, who explored the roles of women in society. That is what this story focuses on. It is about a girl named Louise who is told her husband dies. She had felt trapped in her marriage and dies when she realizes that her husband is alive and her freedom is gone. This theme that marriage in the nineteenth century could be like a prison is told through the setting and characterization of Louise.
Back then in the nineteenth century women didn’t have rights; they had to follow their husbands’ rules, and they couldn’t do anything without their permission. It seems to me like they were trapped at home like in prison you’re not allowed to do anything you want without asking the guard. The marriage didn’t have to be terrible. In fact, Louise says she had loved him sometimes, but often she had not. So she cheered herself up, got back on her feet she felt free again saying she would live for herself.
