Catherine O’Flaherty, well known as Kate Chopin was born in St. Louis Missouri on February 8,1850. Chopin was the third child of five children. Her sisters and brothers died in early childhood, she was the only child to live passed the age twenty-five. Chopin was enrolled in the St.Louis academy of heart,they exposed her to catholic teachings and customs.Sacred heart also allowed her to think independently. She grew up in the house with her mother because her father passed away in a train accident, at age 5. Her mother owned slaves who also raised her. Later ,in June 1870 she met her husband Oscar.They met when she went on a trip to New orleans,Louisiana.Oscar had his businesses which were unsuccessful the first few years.Chopin ran his business …show more content…

She used this theme in order to encourage women to value independence. The Story of An Hour, which was published in 1894, exhibit’s the importance of selfhood and realizing that a women can live independent. In The story of a hour, which took place during the nineteenth century, Louise Mallard is a married woman that learns about her husband's death. She is shocked once she discovers. After sobbing for a while, she later realizes that she no longer has to deal with the bondage of marriage. Mallard later discovers that the news was not true when her husband walked through the door. She then dies of a heart attack because of the shock that her husband was still living. For example,Mallard says “free,free,free” after sobbing and finding out the “bad news”.During this time period woman did not have freedom while married. They wanted independence and with being married they could not have it. Mrs. Louise knew that the death of Mr. Mallard was the only way that she would gain her freedom back because divorce was not an option during the nineteenth century. This story conveys that women could be successful and free without men,which shows how gender roles played a huge part in this time period.This story is sort of related to Chopin's life because her husband died and she had to take care of her six children by herself.She also got her own land after his death and her life
