“The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin This story is a true description of the imbalance of emotions, a marriage can have. The main character in The Story of an Hour deals with loss, heartbreak, grief, relief, joy, happiness, and death. The trials of marriage can leave an individual feeling trapped and unable to live out the experiences they had once hoped for. Through the rollercoaster of emotions of her marriage, Mrs. Mallard felt an overwhelming sense of joy knowing she would have the chance to live her life the way she wanted to.
Mrs. Mallard, the wife of Brently Mallard, a railroad worker who was pronounced dead in an accident. Mrs. Mallards sister Josephine and Richard, Mr. Mallards friend came to tell her heartbreaking news. “Knowing Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death.” (Chopin, p.126)
As Mrs. Mallard wept in her sister’s arms as the grief took her over. She did not quite understand the full story nor did she want to hear it.

(Chopin, p.128) Brently Mallard entered his home. He was nowhere near the site; he had not even heard of the accident. He stood amazed at Josephine’s piercing cry; at Richards’ quick motion to screen him from the view of his wife. (Chopin, p.128) Mrs. Mallard had died of joy that kills. Most would say she died from a heart attack of relief when she saw her husband was alive. Mrs. Mallard was not feeling relief from the news of her husband being alive, but a deep sadness of the loss of her new found happiness. The thought of emotion could go many ways, but reading this story concludes that Mrs. Mallard was feeling a sense of freedom to finally live her life the way she had always wanted to before
