“Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was afflicted with heart trouble, great care was taken to break to her as gently as possible the news of her husband’s death,” or so it was thought. In the short story, The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin, Brently Mallard’s wife was told that he had died in a railroad accident from newspaper sources. Overall, it was the plot of the story that primarily connected to the stories other elements such as point of view, characterization, along with the conflict.
Firstly, the plot of the story was correspondent to the story’s point of view, which was told though his wife. To illustrate, after Mrs. Mallard’s sister told her of the news, she originally wept out of sadness. It was then, however, that she began to feel something else. Mrs, Mallard explains, “There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully. What was it?” Although most wives would have continued to weep sorrowfully, it was Mrs. Mallard who feel something different after the turn of events, something that most others would not feel. Mallard, was impacted by the plot elements. To elaborate, after hearing about the death of Brently Mallard, his wife began to feel something else after a wave of sadness passed over her. “She said it over and over under her breath: ‘free, free, free!” Although she could have continued to feel the common sadness that passes over one after experiencing the death of a loved one, it was because of her husband’s death, that Mrs. Mallard’s characterization highlighted a sensation of freedom and joy. In a word, the stories main plotline of Mr. Mallard's death, primarily relates to elements, such as characterization, specifically of Mrs.
