In the short story, “Story of an Hour,” the tone could be considered to be sad but it quickly changes into joy when Mrs. Mallard realizes that she is free from her husband’s oppression. Then, irony occurs when she discovers that her husband is actually not dead and she not at all free. The tone suddenly moves from joyful and back to depressing when Mrs. Mallard realized this, and it caused her to have a heart attack. In the story, “The Revolt of Mother,” the tone was both disgraceful and appalling.
