A warning, an enemy ghost, never-ending rooms, and a returning house-servant surrounded José Arcadio Buendía’s death. His death has obvious significance by being the first of the of the founders to die, and he was finally released from the grips of his madness and paranoia. Úrsula lost another important man in her life. José Arcadio Buendía’s death was probably the hardest loss for Úrsula to cope with, even though it was not a surprise. The hauntings were a result of José Arcadio Buendía murdering Prudencio Aguilar after he insulted Úrsula (Márquez 21). Surprisingly, Prudencio Aguilar was the only person able to console a dying José Arcadio Buendía. The enemies seemed to create a friendship over competition, “They promised each other to set up a breding farm for magnificent birds, not so much to enjoy their victories, which they would not need then, as to have something to do on the tedious Sundays of death,” (Márquez 139). Their connection seems to make sense as José Arcadio Buendía is in limbo between life on earth and life after death, except for the fact that Prudencio Aguilar’s hauntings was the reason José Arcadio Buendía lost his mind. Their enemy to friendship story could teach their descendants that everyone has their own stories and opinions but respect and friendship can come from conversation instead of war. Even though Colonel Aureliano Buendía did not witness this happening, he creates a partnership with José Raquel Moncada (a conservative) to put their differences aside and work for the bettering of Macando.
